Worldwide demand for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) in commercial aviation will grow by 3-4% annually over the next decade. This puts further pressure on the MRO industry, already faced with tightness in the labor market and an instable supply chain.
Operators have ordered large numbers of new aircraft to accommodate growth and meet their sustainability goals, but these replacement programs will continue for many years. Operators therefore also focus on improving the productivity of their current assets by increasing utilisation and upgrading of cabins. Service lives of existing assets are extended to compensate for delays in the delivery of new assets.
These developments illustrate the challenge that airlines and the MRO industry face in meeting the demand for air transport.
This context calls for a radically different view of the maintenance processes. The MRO industry will undergo a shift from a focus on organizational cost to a focus on process effectiveness (throughput). Ensuring availability of aircraft, components and engines becomes the most important driver for the MRO industry. Deployment of the limited resources (manpower, facilities, materials) is optimized in order to deliver quality and reliability to the operators in the shortest possible time.
The relationship between MRO and operator undergoes a fundamental change. Operator and MRO become partners and jointly define a vision on maintenance with a focus on optimizing asset ground time and optimizing MRO resources, without compromizing quality standards. The current industry trend towards longer term MRO agreements is leading this way forward.
We believe in the improvement potential of the MRO industry to develop a new value proposition that takes into account both the earning potential of the MRO and today's needs of the operators. LEAN MRO solutions is the catalyst that can help industry partners shape this development together with the people in their organizations.
